Eight Straight: Grace Women’s Soccer Sinks Lindsey Wilson

WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Grace’s women’s soccer team completed a perfect nonconference season with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Lindsey Wilson on Wednesday night.
The Lancers improved to 8-0 on the season after dispatching the four-time NAIA national champions at 1st Source Bank Field.
Cassidy Felger scored the game winner, and Grace’s defense took care of the rest with the team’s eighth-straight shutout.
Grace finished the match with commanding leads in shots (16-6) and corner kicks (8-1).
Grace leads the NAIA with eight shutouts. They have outscored their opponents 29-0. The team’s 8-0 start is tied for the second-best start in team history.
The teams took turns in possession to begin the game before Grace created two quick chances from Abby Hodkin and Lilli Oberhoff. LWC’s goalkeeper saved both shots from the edge of the box.
Rosalie Gefrorer also tried a high shot off a corner kick, but her attempt was also saved.
As the half wore on, Grace’s confidence seemed to grow. Grace had a strong chance midway in the half when a cross from Gefrorer met Hodkin near the goal, but Hodkin’s one-time shot was saved.
The Lancers’ offensive pressure finally broke through LWC’s defense with five minutes left in the half. Zoe Mueller led Amy Wearing with a pass along the left sideline.
Wearing crossed into the middle of the box, and Felger shot past the goalkeeper for the game’s only goal.
Lindsey Wilson had limited chances on offense, finishing the half scoreless with only two shot attempts – neither of which was on goal.
By comparison, Grace had seven shots on goal in the first half and three corner kicks.
The Lancers continued to threaten in the second half, building several waves of attack through their possession. Grace owned six of the first nine shot attempts in the half.
Audrey Abel fired a threatening shot early in the second half, and Wearing tried two shots in a three-minute span.
The Blue Raiders were again largely quiet on offense. Lindsey Wilson generated a handful of advances into Grace’s end of the field, but the swarming defense of Jaylin Young, Mueller, Jasmin Slump and Oberhoff snuffed out most chances.
Lindsey Wilson finished the match with just six shot attempts and only one on target. LWC’s final shot of the match came with 21 minutes left in regulation.
Sofia Williams recorded the shutout after making one save in the match.
The Lancers will begin Crossroads League action next week. Grace will play at Mt. Vernon Nazarene on Sept. 25 to kick off league play.
Grace Knocks Off RV UNOH
LIMA, Ohio - Grace College’s men’s soccer team scored four goals in a win over the University of Northwestern Ohio on Wednesday afternoon.
The Lancers (1-4-2) broke the ice just three minutes into the game and added a trio of markers in the second half to secure the victory.
Grace was led in victory by two goals from Juan Garcia and a clean-sheet performance from Matteo Conci.
Grace wasted little time in finding goal, besting the UNOH keeper just over three minutes into the game. The goal came off a free kick opportunity from Nathan Van Keulan whose try from just outside the 18-yard box slipped through the goalies legs to give the Lancers the early advantage.
The next 10 minutes elapsed without either side threatening before the Racers had a shot on goal that was easily handled by Matteo Conci.
UNOH kept the pressure up and were awarded four corner kicks including back-to-back chances but Grace thwarted each of the Racers’ chances and maintained the one-goal advantage.
The Lancers’ offense was held quiet through the middle of the half, before Garcia and Joao Laranjo had consecutive chances for Grace.
Josh Cruz nearly doubled Grace’s lead with 7:36 remaining in the half after a great run from midfield saw him blitz past UNOH’s defense. Cruz’s attempt to chip the ball past the Racers’ keeper trailed just wide of net but seemed to spark the Lancers’ offense late.
Just minutes later Daniel Santos Rosa played a long free kick into the box but Dan Allen’s attempted head went high. Another free kick, this time from Garcia, was blasted on goal which forced a save to send the game to the halftime intermission with Grace leading 1-0.
At the half Grace held a 6-2 shot advantage and directed five shots on goal. UNOH held a 4-1 corner kick lead and fouled five times compared to Grace’s four.
The second half started with Grace and UNOH exchanging shots but the score remained unchanged.
The Racers had a chance to level the game 20 minutes into the half, but their shot was blocked by a Lancer defender and shortly after Grace doubled the lead.
The Lancers had a point-blank opportunity denied by an illegal tackle in the box which saw the referee award Grace a penalty kick. Garcia was chosen to take the PK for Grace and he calmly slipped the ball past the keeper into the goal to give Grace the 2-0 advantage.
Eight minutes later it was the Racers who were on the receiving end of a PK opportunity, but Matteo Conci smothered the chance to keep his bid for his second clean sheet of the season alive.
As the clock ticked under seven minutes remaining Grace scored again. This time it was Daniel Santos Rosa who netted the goal after being on the receiving end of a pass from Sebastian Lozano.
Three minutes later it was Lozano setting up another goal as he fed Garcia for his second goal of the match.
The final moments passed without incident as Grace put the finishing touches on the 4-0 victory.
Conci made three saves in the shutout performance including a PK save. The Lancers held a 15-8 advantage on shots and a 10-3 advantage for shots on goal. UNOH had five corner kicks compared to Grace’s three. Each team was whistled for 15 fouls but the Racers received four yellow cards while the Lancers one got one.
Grace will next be in action on Wednesday to kickoff Crossroads League play at home against Mt. Vernon.
Grace Volleyball Grabs Sweep Of USF
WINONA LAKE, Ind. - A balanced attack led Grace’s volleyball team to a 3-0 victory over St. Francis on Wednesday.
The No. 19 Lancers (10-2, 4-1 Crossroads League) continued their impressive start to the season. The win comes fresh off Grace tying for its best NAIA ranking in program history (No. 19) earlier in the day.
Grace had four players collect at least six kills; the squad hit at a .262 percentage in an efficient outing.
Grace’s offense seemed to get better as the match continued.
In the first set, the trio of Anna Ballengee, Alisha Voss and Jadyn Ross powered Grace’s attack. The three players combined for 13 of Grace’s 15 kills in the set.
Grace ran away with a 25-19 win in the first set, and the Lancers’ dominance seemed to grow.
In the second set, Grace’s defense boosted the team. The Cougars were held to a negative hitting percentage (-.067).
The Lancers racked up six block points during the set, led by two block assists each from Livia Tate, Voss and Ross.
The Cougars made the Lancers work hard to secure the sweep in the third set. Both teams hit the ball well with 16 kills from the Cougars and 15 from the Lancers.
But Grace was more efficient down the stretch as late points from Tate, Voss and Ballengee helped finalize the 25-23 victory.
Ballengee produced 10 kills on a .364 percentage, and Ross had eight kills (.389 percentage) and three block assists.
Voss was a force with eight kills on 13 swings (.538) to go along with two solos and two block assists, and Tate amassed 6 kills (.385), 1 solo and 3 block assists.
Morgan Syoen flirted with a double-double with 17 assists and seven digs, and Liz Schmidt produced a match-high 15 digs.
The Lancers are back home on Saturday, hosting Bethel for a 1 p.m. match at the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center.
