KCCRVC Approves Grant Increase For Lilly Center

Kosciusko County Convention, Recreation and Visitors Commission approved a grant increase for Lilly Center for Lakes and Streams at a meeting Wednesday.
Lilly Center for Lakes and Streams Director Dr. Nate Bosch emphasized that the biggest draw to the area is the lakes, and the biggest threat to the lakes is blue-green algae toxins. Bosch requested a funding increase from $15,000, which is currently going toward staffing costs, to $30,000.
Bosch stated Lilly Center for Lakes and Streams plans to increase testing from 10 to 15 weeks next summer and a new algae type will be included in the testing.
The commission approved this request.
Kosciusko County Convention and Visitors Bureau Executive Director Cori Humes provided updates on summer tourism successes. Humes stated the Waterways Passports initiative was successful, drawing attention to the county’s lakes and waterways. Travel writer and influencer William Flood was noted for his promotion of the area, highlighting antiques and garage sales.
The KCCRVC revisited the City-County Athletic Complex agreement. The terms were approved in the last meeting, so the agreement was signed.
CCAC Executive Director Mike Hagy reported a substantial increase in participation:
• 38 more kids enrolled in soccer this season.
• 15-20 more matches were held compared to last year.
• Indoor rentals have doubled or tripled, marking significant growth.
However, Hagy stated the CCAC will soon be in need of renovations and maintenance, particularly for indoor spaces.
The Lake City Skiers extended their thanks for motor donations, and shared plans to bid for the 2027 World Championships, which would bring in thousands of attendees from out of the community.
Kevin Harris, representing the haunted attraction Soul Taker’s Acres, requested a grant to support radio and billboard advertising. The event brings a significant influx of visitors and has become a major regional attraction. It is the biggest fundraiser for the fairgrounds. The request resulted in a partial approval of $2,500 for radio advertising, plus $500 for a social media campaign.
Leesburg Methodist's Country Christmas With Susie and Mark McEntire event is set to take place at Lakeview Middle School Dec. 14. This fundraiser benefits Toys for Tots, with admission being a toy. This event draws attendees from out of state and has a capacity of 800.
Leesburg Methodist Pastor Rob Seewald provided information showing a $60,000 economic impact from the event. Seewald's request for advertising and accommodations funding was approved.
The next KCCRVC meeting will be in the Old Courtroom, 121 N. Indiana St., at 9 a.m. Nov. 13.
