WARSAW — On a night that Warsaw was up 42-0 at halftime and wound up rolling for eight touchdowns on the way to a 56-7 Northern Lakes Conference football win against Goshen, Bart Curtis outlined positives and negatives.
“We got to play a lot of kids,” said Curtis as the Tigers head coach was leaving Fisher Field Friday, Sept. 6. “That’s what I liked the most.
“We did have seven offensive penalties, one defensive penalty and put the ball on the ground three times (in the first quarter). We had three kids not report for their kicking gig because they were excited about something that happened so they were on the sidelines with their friends.”
Led by senior Drew Sullivan (nine carries for 89), junior Brody Duncan (five for 53), sophomore Tucker Reed (four for 37), senior Evan Davis (two for 35), junior Daylon Fitzpatrick (six for 27), senior Robbie Hoffert (five for 26) and junior Quinton Brock (three for 24), Warsaw (2-1, 1-0) had 42 rushes for 390 yards.
“I expect execution,” said Curtis. “Regardless of who’s in there, the position doesn’t change.”
Sullivan completed 5-of-8 passes for 76 yards with one touchdown. Many of those aerial gains came during “two-minute offense” situation at the end of the first half.
“It was the perfect scenario,” said Curtis. “We had 1:38 left so we worked on something that we’re probably going to need down the road.
“I’m excited that the kids could experience a win. We’ve got to play a whole lot bette against some of the people that are coming up.”
The Tigers finished with 20 first downs (Goshen amassed seven with five coming in the second half).
Sophomore quarterback Carter Diaz completed 7-of-13 passes for 161 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions for Goshen (0-3, 0-1). Junior Logan Mishler caught the 57-yard TD pass in the third quarter and senior Gabe Janisse caught the other six completions for 105 yards. The visitors finished with 203 total yards.
Both Warsaw touchdowns after intermission came in the third period — a 1-yard run by Fitzpatick at the end of a eight-play, 49-yard drive and a 95-yard kickoff return by senior Tristan Wilson.
The Tigers produced five touchdown drives and turned an interception into a TD in the opening two quarters.
The first scoring drive went 15 plays for 63 yards and concluded with a 4-yard run by Sullivan on the game’s first possession.
On Goshen’s fourth play from scrimmage, senior Cohen Heady intercepted a Diaz pass and took it 10 yards to the end zone. Warsaw led 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.
After a RedHawk punt, the first of four second-period scoring drives took seven plays and 53 yards and ended with a 17-yard Reed run.
Following an interception by senior Daylor Vilamaa, junior Brock’s 10-yard pass from Sullivan punctuated a six-play, 80-yard drive.
After a Goshen punt, a 3-yard TD run by Reed came at the close of a six-play, 32-yard drive.
Following another RedHawk punt, Sullivan’s 7-yard run came at the end of a nine-play, 74-yard march. Senior Mason Smythe kick six extra points in the first half and two in the second.
After beating Goshen for the 17th straight time, Warsaw now leads the all-time series 35-34-2.
“You know what you’re going to get out of a Bart Curtis-coached team,” said first-year RedHawks coach Joey Heclinski. “They’re very sound offensively, defensively and in the kicking game.
“They have an offensive identity they learned back in peewee ball. I’m so proud of the way our guys fought.”
