1-Year-Old Killed In Fork Truck Accident

A 1-year-old child was killed Wednesday in a fork truck accident.
According to a news release from the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office, the accident occurred at 12734 N. CR 1025W, Nappanee, in the northwest section of Kosciusko County in Scott Township.
At 1:09 p.m. Wednesday, Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office deputies and emergency personnel responded to an accident involving a fork truck (also known as a forklift) and a 1-year-old child. Preliminary investigation determined that the fork truck driver was not aware the child was behind the machine while the machine was in motion. While in reverse, the vehicle hit and backed over the child, the release states.
Emergency personnel arrived on scene and began performing life-saving measures on the child. After several minutes of treating the 1-year-old, Kosciusko County Coroner Tyler Huffer pronounced the toddler dead from injuries suffered in the accident.
The operator of the fork truck was Kevin Borkholder, 34, Nappanee, the release states. The name of the child is not being released at this time.
The KCSO was assisted at the scene by the Nappanee Fire Department, Nappanee EMS, Milford Police Department, Department of Child Services and the Kosciusko County Coroner’s Office.
The accident remains under investigation by the KCSO Detective Division.
