WINONA LAKE – Winona Lake’s Trick-or-Treat on the Trail drew a large crowd in its third year Saturday.
Holly Hummitch, Winona Lake park director, estimated Saturday’s event had between 1,500 and 1,800 people attend.
For two hours Saturday, children were able to trick-or-treat on the Winona Lake greenway.
Winona Lake Fire Department Chief Kevin Gelbaugh said the fire department participates in Trick-or-Treat on the Trail every year and hands out candy as part of the process. The fire and police departments also act as safety measures on either end of the greenway and help make sure people who show up with kids leave with the same kids they started with.
After trick-or-treating, people were able to go to Limitless Park for s’mores, games sponsored by the Whitko Career Academy and a showing of “The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown,” Hummitch said.
Hummitch said Saturday’s event was started because there wasn’t an event between summer and winter except Kringlefest and the Fourth of July festival in Winona Lake, so she thought Trick-or-Treat on the Trail would be a good way to utilize Winona Lake’s greenway.
The event has grown in the three years it has been put on. Hummitch said they’ve had perfect weather every time it’s been put on.
“I think it’s great weather and I think it’s a great way to enjoy the community,” she said.
Gelbaugh said the event helps keep children off the streets and out of the way of cars.
