BOURBON – Indiana law enforcement has launched an investigation into an employee with Triton School Corporation over alleged inappropriate conduct.
Zach Whittaker, physical education and criminal justice teacher and head football coach, was identified as the teacher in question in a letter sent out to parents and guardians by Triton Superintendent Jeremy Riffle.
Recently, Triton School Corporation administrators received information concerning a possible relationship during a previous school year between Whittaker and a now former student, according to the letter. The information legally necessitated a report be made to certain state agencies. Those required reports occurred immediately.
“The safety and well-being of our students is and will always remain the top priority of Triton School Corporation. Each staff member is expected, without exception, to abide by this simple but uncompromisable requirement. Anyone who violates this basic principle will be promptly and appropriately disciplined,” the letter states.
As a precaution, Whittaker was put on administrative leave at that time while Triton and the state agencies evaluated the circumstances. On Monday, Whittaker submitted his immediate resignation.
“Our parents, staff and students can be certain that Triton School Corporation will take all steps necessary to safeguard the well-being of those under our supervision. Any form of harmful conduct toward our students will not be tolerated,” the letter reads. “So not to interfere with the ongoing investigation, Triton School Corporation will be unable to comment further on this matter at this time.”
Riffle said Whittaker was head coach of the high school football team for two years and assistant coach for about four years.
Whittaker was hired as a teacher in spring 2019, according to Triton’s website. Before that, Whittaker spent nine years as a football coach for Jimtown High School.
