The Tippecanoe Audubon Society (TAS) aims to support conservation and environmental education to promote appreciation, understanding and preservation of birds for present and future generations.
TAS recently teamed up with the Kosciusko County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) to further bird education by donating 10 pairs of Vortex youth binoculars to be used for the SWCDs education programs. Funding for an additional 20 pairs of binoculars was provided by an Indiana Audubon Society (IAS) Mumford and Keller Grant. The Kosciusko SWCD has a robust youth education program which includes field trips to natural areas, according to a provided news release.
Using binoculars encourages students to focus in on a bird and take time to observe, appreciate and learn. In October, over 500 fourth-grade students took the binoculars for a test run during a week of field trips to Wildwood Nature Preserve. Students reported seeing white-breasted nuthatches, wood ducks, red-bellied woodpeckers and more. The Kosciusko SWCD aims to use the binoculars as a tool to inspire young people to care about birds and nature.
The Tippecanoe Audubon Society is a local chapter of the National Audubon Society, serving the counties of Cass, Fulton, Kosciusko, Marshall, Miami, Noble, Wabash and Whitley. TAS leads monthly field trips, hosts guest speakers, conducts bird counts and manages three nature preserves.
