November 20, 2024 at 5:53 p.m.

Joan Marie Higgins Riordan, 79, Chicago and formerly of Warsaw, passed away peacefully Nov. 18, 2024.
She was born March 23, 1945, in Chicago, to John and Bridget “Sis” Creaby Higgins. She grew up in the fiercely proud Irish neighborhood of Canaryville on Chicago’s south side. The daughter of Irish immigrants, her heritage and Roman Catholic faith were cornerstones for her. On Nov. 1, 1978, she married the love of her life, Edward Joseph Riordan, who preceded her in death in 2016.
She leaves behind two sons, James, of Waukegan, Ill.; and Daniel (Violet) Riordan, of Chicago; two grandsons, Matthew and Jacob; a sister, Barbara, of Lemont, Ill.; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and other friends and family she loved dearly, especially her niece, Patrice (Martin) Griffin, who spent summers with her family in Warsaw visiting Joan and would later serve as a caregiver for her.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; sisters: Theresa, Frances, Noreen and Rita; and a brother, Jackie.
While she moved back to Chicago in 2017 after her time in Warsaw, she held a special place in her heart for those friends and neighbors who became like family. She also cherished her time as a CCD teacher at Sacred Heart and as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA).
A funeral Mass will be held at a later date and the burial will be private.
