Veterans Day is observed on Nov. 11 to for honor military veterans of the United States Armed Forces.
It was originally known as Armistice Day, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs website. Armistice Day officially received its name in America in 1926 through a Congressional resolution. It became a national holiday 12 years later by similar Congressional action.
The first celebration using the term Veterans Day occurred in Birmingham, Ala., in 1947. In 1954, Congress passed the bill President Dwight Eisenhower signed proclaiming Nov. 11 as Veterans Day.
Below are some local events scheduled for Veterans Day.

Gift drawings for veterans go from 12:30 to 4 p.m.
