SILVER LAKE – At Wednesday night's meeting, the Silver Lake Town Council and members of the public could view the new fire truck, brought to the meeting by Fire Chief John Conley.
The fire department also received a grant for 16 sets of gear and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) equipment but needs to update their Cascade system to fit the new air packs.
Mitch Hansel, of USI Consultants, opened bids for a new East Sycamore Street resurfacing project. There were three bids: Brooks Construction for $312,944, L.A.W. Son Inc. for $297,680.30 and Phend and Brown for $275,759.47.
Adam Custer, of Mobile Storage Near Me, spoke to the council about cargo shipping containers on commercial property, asking if the council members would support allowing commercial business to appeal to the Board of Zoning Appeals on a case-by-case basis to allow these shipping containers.
Council is not writing a letter of support to the BZA on this matter because they were divided on the issue, with Jean Weller opposed and both Hugh Murfin and Nichole Taylor undecided.
In other business:
• Fire hydrants will be flushed on May 20.
• Council is donating $400 to Silver Lake Days' petting zoo, $500 to the Fire Department's golf outing on June 30 and $250 toward the Lions Club's backpack program.
• There will be a public hearing ahead of the June 12 meeting at 7 p.m. to discuss water and sewer rate increases.
Council will next meet directly after the public hearing at 7 p.m. June 12 at Town Hall.
