BOURBON – Triton School Corporation students will have a two-hour early dismissal April 8 for the solar eclipse.
Superintendent Jeremy Riffle said there will be a letter sent to parents about the corporation’s plans regarding the eclipse.
The eclipse is scheduled for approximately 3 to 5 p.m. April 8. Due to the arrival of the eclipse, Triton will dismiss schools at 1 p.m.
“This will make it possible for all students to be safely home before the eclipse reaches its maximum coverage,” Riffle said. When the eclipse is scheduled to start is about the time students are typically released from school.
Riffle said since “we are in the path of totality,” people are coming to the area to view the eclipse. One of the areas of concern is people may be pulling off major thoroughfares like U.S. 30 and 31 to view the eclipse. Riffle brought up concerns about what that would look like as far as getting students home safe.
Earlier in the meeting, the school board approved moving forward with obtaining general obligation bonds.
In February, the board heard a report from Sean McGill, manager with Baker Tilly, about general obligation bonds and possible payoff schedules. The general obligation bond capacity for the school corporation is $1.85 million.
Triton is still prioritizing projects it can use the general obligation bond money on.
Monday, there were no discussion or questions about the general obligation bonds or the presentation the board had listened to in February. The board approved moving foward with the general obligation bonds 4-0. Board President Terri Barnhart was absent.
In other business, the board:
• Approved a quote for $30,951.93 for high school auditorium curtains from All Pro.
• Approved a quote for $35,000 from Hensley Concrete for the school corporation’s sidewalk project.
• Heard kindergarten registration is April 9 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the elementary school.
• Heard third-graders took the IREAD test last week.
• Approved hiring Kathryn Nelson and Isaiah Stockman as substitute teachers, Paula Meredith as a bus driver CDL/ELDT trainer, Tori Kistler as a full-time bus driver, Kris Berger as a substitute bus driver, Micah Kister as a bus garage volunteer, Kerry Kennedy as the DECA sponsor, Linzi Polkas a part-time school corporation nurse, Ashley Wright as a volunteer tennis coach and Joe Soriano as a volunteer junior high/elementary school wrestling coach.
