In her childhood, Dr. Miry Makebish saw what a lack of good medical care could mean for a community and its people.
Now, she’s part of the Parkview Physicians Group (PPG) team in Warsaw making sure local youth have a strong, healthy start to their lives, according to a news release from Parkview.
Makebish, who recently started practicing at Parkview Physicians Group – Pediatrics, 1355 Mariners Drive, Warsaw, was born in a rural town in Paraguay before emigrating to the United States in her youth. During her childhood, Makebish saw the impact of inadequate healthcare in her community, and it inspired her interest in medicine.
“While living in Paraguay, I saw the difficulties of living in a third-world country with very limited medical access at that time,” Makebish said. “I also saw some family members suffer from preventable diseases such as polio. I felt privileged to be able to come to the U.S. and study, especially since it is very difficult for citizens of Paraguay to be able to come to the U.S. All of these experiences gave me a heart to help others and give back in whatever ways I could.”
When they arrived in the U.S., Makebish and her family settled in a rural New York town about midway between New York City and Albany. She completed her undergraduate studies at The State University of New York at Albany. While in school, Makebish worked as a medical center volunteer in intensive care, oncology and cardiology units; worked two years as an emergency medical technician with the local ambulance services; and served as an emergency department technician care assistant.
She then attended medical school in the Caribbean at St. Georges School of Medicine in Grenada. Makebish completed her medical residency in the pediatric unit at the University of Florida in Pensacola, then worked as a pediatrician in a rural hospital in southern New Hampshire before starting her practice with Parkview.
“Within my specialty, I enjoy preventive medicine especially in topics related to nutrition, childhood obesity and metabolic syndrome,” she said. “I enjoy being able to integrate a holistic approach to the care I provide for my patients combined with conventional medicine. I think a good balance is important to be able to think critically and logically about medical problems. I also enjoy working with complex cases that demand more creativity to solve problems.”
Makebish is a Christian pediatrician and says her faith is an important part of her life. While staying active in her church and community, she also enjoys reading, running and traveling.
“We’re proud to add Dr. Makebish to our pediatrics office here in Warsaw,” said Scott Gabriel, market president, Parkview Health Northwest. “Dr. Makebish brings a diverse background of experience, and her familiarity with and previous work in rural communities is a boon in serving our patients in Kosciusko County and nearby areas. Parents can be assured that her devotion to pediatric health makes her a great provider for all of their children’s health needs.”
For new patients wishing to start care with Makebish, appointments can be scheduled by contacting PPG – Pediatrics in Warsaw at 574-267-6778.
