Doubts About Tim Smith

Editor, Times-Union:
I am writing to bring to your attention a matter of significant concern regarding the candidacy of Tim Smith for Congress. As a member of our community, I believe it is crucial to ensure that those seeking public office uphold the highest standards of integrity, ethics, and accountability. Mr. Smith's involvement with Pierceton Woods Academy (Lifeline Youth and Family Services) and Lasting Change raises serious doubts about his fitness for elected office.
Mr. Smith's tenure coincided with troubling allegations of sexual abuse and misconduct. These allegations, as reported extensively in the media, raise questions about Smith's leadership and judgment. Since 2017, DCS received at least 27 reports alleging sexual abuse or inappropriate behavior by staff at Pierceton Woods. Smith’s role in managing the response to these allegations, including attempts to secure immunity from lawsuits filed by abuse victims, calls into question his commitment to transparency and accountability.
Mr. Smith had a responsibility to prioritize the safety and well-being of the youth entrusted to Pierceton Woods. His actions suggest a willingness to prioritize institutional interests over the rights and dignity of abuse victims. This is not the kind of leadership we need in Congress.
Furthermore, Smith's misrepresentation of the situation to the legislature in pursuit of immunity for Pierceton Woods demonstrates a lack of integrity. Elected officials must be held to the highest ethical standards, and Smith's conduct falls short of these expectations.
We deserve representatives who will uphold the values of accountability and transparency.
