Jack Allen Town, of Warsaw, passed away on June 26, 2024, at Paddock Springs in Warsaw, at the age of 88. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the Paddock Springs staff for their loving care of Jack.
He was born on June 11, 1936, in Plymouth, to Irene Briney and H. Demoine Town. Jack was a 1954 graduate of Richland Center High School in Fulton County. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and proudly served until his honorable discharge with the rank of sergeant in 1962.
Jack went on the best blind date ever and met his future wife, Margaret “Peg” Elizabeth Campbell. They were married on Oct. 8, 1960, and celebrated 63 years of marriage together before Peg passed away on Dec. 27, 2023. He worked for United Telephone Company in Warsaw for over 20 years, finishing his career with Sprint in Mansfield, Ohio. In his retirement years, Jack and Peg moved back to Warsaw where he always kept busy. He delivered flowers for Creative Floral Designs in Warsaw, and the week before Mother’s Day he was a busy driver. He drove a school bus for Warsaw Community Schools and delivered buses around the state for Kerlin. Jack also worked part-time as a funeral attendant for Redpath-Fruth Funeral Home for many years. He enjoyed greeting many friends at the door during visitation and also catching up with them later. He was a longtime member of Warsaw Evangelical Presbyterian Church where he served as a former deacon and an elder. Jack was a loving and proud dad and grandfather, who enjoyed sharing about the lives of his grandchildren. He will be dearly missed and remembered fondly by his family and friends.
Jack’s capacity for hard work is one of the first things that come to mind among family and friends as they remember him. Jack grew up being the older brother to three sisters. Jack displayed noticeable joy as he shared stories of working on the farm or delivering papers as a young boy on his paper route. He learned the value of hard work and one of his favorite childhood memories to recount was buying train tickets to New York City at the age of 12 for his eldest sister and himself to visit their Aunt Helen and Uncle Ronald. Jack and Peg spent a number of years making their one annual vacation a fishing trip in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. He loved to talk about catching “the big one” with friends and family. After Jack and Peg moved to the Warsaw area, they worked together to build a house that they lived in and raised a family for more than 20 years. The neighbor across the street always referred to the home as “the house that Jack built.” Jack’s family started attending First Presbyterian Church in Warsaw in 1978 and as time unfolded both Jack and Peg served in various capacities. Jack loved to serve the church and he was always willing to help in any way needed. Jack’s propensity to work was an ever-present example before his family. His provision and example is something his children are very thankful for.
He will be lovingly remembered by his daughter, Robin L. Town, Kenosha, Wis.; son, Allen (Christine) Town, Winthrop Harbor, Ill.; and three grandchildren: Caleb (Mary) Town, Milwaukee, Wis.; Ethan Town, Oceanside, Calif.; and Anna Town, Winthrop Harbor, Ill. Also surviving are three sisters: Janet (Tom) Bridegroom, Juanita (John) Yoder and Judy (Mick) Evans; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Peg, and his infant son, Jeffery.
Jack’s life will be celebrated with a service at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 29 at Redpath-Fruth Funeral Home, 225 Argonne Road, Warsaw, and officiated by Pastor Andrew Morton. Friends and family may visit prior to the service from 8:30 to10:30 a.m. A graveside service with military rites will follow at 2 p.m. at Rochester I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Rochester.
Memorial donations may be directed to Warsaw Evangelical Presbyterian Church, 210 S. High St., Warsaw, IN 46580; or to the American Legion Post #49, 301 N. Buffalo St., Warsaw, IN 46580.
