Trash Bid Received At Syracuse Council Meeting

SYRACUSE - Only one trash bid was received at the Syracuse Town Council meeting Tuesday, and it was from the town’s current waste collection provider — Borden Waste Away.
The council did not read the amount of the bid from Borden Waste Away, according to Clerk-treasurer Virginia Cazier and they decided to hold off and extend their current contract for now until they can rebid to see if they can get more responses.
Council members heard from Greg Miller, of Miller Insurance Group, about the additional cost to allow police personnel to use police vehicles for personal use. According to Cazier, Miller hadn’t gotten any quotes, but he anticipated it would be an additional $10,000-$15,000 and they couldn’t go beyond 30 miles of Syracuse. He was going to get quotes from Selective Insurance and EMC, which is the town’s current carrier.
Cazier said the council also wants to get the policy updated.
Continuation of tax abatements were approved for Polywood, Travel Lite, Quality Engineered Services, Ridgestone and Legacy Wood.
Town Manager David Wilkinson told the council he wants to do a walkway on Chicago Street and Bowser Road, behind the access road and Ind. 13, and told the council it may cost between $1-2 million but there are plenty of grants available.
In other business:
• Police Chief Jim Layne received approval to purchase 12 vests at a cost of $17,135.88. He told the council he was pursuing a grant for $4,800.
• The fire department received approval to install concrete in front of the administration building from Thompson Concrete, North Webster, at a cost of $26,400.
• Resident Matt Gooding praised the park department for the new buoys they placed, saying they are very visible.
• Heard the 10th annual Mudtastic run is Saturday.
