The Kosciusko County Historical Society announced an upcoming event on June 21.
The Old Jail Museum will be hosting “Museum Under the Big Top” from 5 to 9 p.m. in conjunction with the June Third Friday’s celebration in downtown Warsaw. The event will feature music from a historic Tangly Air Calliope, face painting and games for kids, as well as circus-themed refreshments. There will also be an appearance by one of only a handful of operational steam calliopes in the United States.
Once a staple of the traditional circus parade in America, these unique instruments represent an experience rarely heard today, according to a news release from the Historical Society.
At 7 p.m., there will be a concert of traditional circus music presented by the Peru Circus Concert Band. In addition to these activities, the museum will be hosting an open house from 5 to 9 p.m.
This year’s featured exhibit at the museum celebrates Indiana’s rich circus history. At one time, Indiana was home to nearly every major circus in the country. This exhibit includes a vast collection of historic posters, pictures, models and artifacts.
The Old Jail Museum is at 121 N. Indiana St., Warsaw. For more information, contact the museum at 574-269-1078.
