PIERCETON – Months after she was named the 2023 Woman of the Year at the Kosciusko Chamber of Commerce Annual Awards Dinner, Georgia Tenney will serve as the grand marshal at the Pierceton Days Parade.
Kelsea DeGaetano, president of the Pierceton Chamber of Commerce, said Tenney is very involved in the Pierceton area.
Tenney worked for Pierceton Middle School for over 30 years and is now retired, according to a previous Times-Union article.
Tenney is involved with the Pierceton Chamber of Commerce as their treasurer, plays piano for St. Francis Xavier Church, is vice president of the Whitko School Board, is a member of the Dunlap Lions Club and runs the Pierceton Food Bank.
She is also a member of the Pierceton Library Board, Pierceton Christmas Committee, was asked to be on the Kosciusko County Parks Board, plans pancake breakfasts and spends her Fridays helping with bingo at Miller’s Merry Manor, according to a previous Times-Union article.
Tenney does a lot around Pierceton and it made sense for her to be chosen as grand marshal, said DeGaetano. DeGaetano also said Tenney being named Woman of the Year helped in the decision.
Tenney said her being named Woman of the Year was a big deal for Pierceton because she doesn’t think the town has had a representative of the town receive the award before she did.
When nominated for the award, those nominating Tenney said they never met anyone more committed to serving the community with her time, energy and loving heart and Pierceton was blessed to have her reside and serve in the community. The speech for the award also said Tenney makes herself visible to Pierceton business owners by walking in and sharing her optimistic way of life. She is always available to her neighbors and anyone in the Pierceton community for a little advice, help, hug, and has a prayer list she is always adding to.
She said she was surprised at being asked to be the grand marshal for the parade. She was initially going to decorate a golf cart for the parade as the 2023 Woman of the Year when she was approached to be the grand marshal.
She said she loves Pierceton and does what she can for the town.
“I don’t do things because I want the recognition,” Tenney said. She also noted there are plenty of residents in Pierceton that deserve the honor of being parade grand marshal.
Tenney said her mother always said to bloom where you plant yourself and she said she think she’s done that in Pierceton.
