Seven cases were continued at the Warsaw code enforcement hearing Tuesday.
Cathy Wade provided an update on a house at 815 E. Clark St.
Building Inspector Robert Hurford did an inspection on Monday, and the bathroom was not finished; however, Wade stated that later that night, the bathroom was completed. She provided photos of the water running. Wade stated that an obstacle to completing the updates was that NIPSCO projected it would take up to six weeks to install a gas meter. Gas is needed for her hot water heater and gas stove.
Hearing Officer Tom Earhart continued the case until September in order for Wade to finish the bathroom and kitchen, and to declutter.
Kevin Shepherd spoke about progress at 602 S. Morton St. He stated the siding is mostly done, the garage windows have been removed, but the carpet and trim need finished.
Earhart asked why this had not been completed in the projected six-week timeframe. Shepherd stated there were some issues with the contractor underestimating the project. Hurford advised there would be a substantial fine if the changes were not completed, inspected and approved by the Sept. 3 meeting.
Chad Patrick appeared to discuss deck updates at 852 Lydia Drive.
Patrick stated that after retroactively getting the proper building permits for his deck, the contractor, Roger Burkholder, who had built the deck and agreed to get it up to code, had not taken action to correct the deck. Patrick stated that Burkholder, who had initially been "the nicest guy in the world," sent him belligerent texts and he hasn't been heard from him since June 5, when he promised to make some progress and didn't follow through.
Hurford stated that during the building inspection, Burkholder was belligerent to him as well before calming down and becoming "the nicest guy in the world." Hurford recommended fining Burkholder, and Earhart said he would consider it and follow up at the September hearing. Earhart advised Patrick to move forward with getting the deck up to code using different contractors.
Representatives of the following addresses were not present at the hearing:
• Deluxe Inn, 2575 E. Center St., was continued to the September hearing to follow up with a six-month deadline to get rid of shipping containers.
• 104 E. Prairie St. was continued to the September hearing to follow up with closing updates. The owner will be contacted about keeping hearing members informed.
• 1014 E. Fort Wayne St. was continued to the September hearing to follow up with overgrown brush and poison ivy. Earhart will look into the city mowing the property and charging the owner.
A case for Pawstars, located at 2584 Walton Blvd., was dismissed.
