League Of Women Voters Working To Get People Registered To Vote

Along with pony rides, line dancing and a host of other activities at the Western-themed Third Friday downtown Warsaw last night was a booth for the League of Women Voters for people to get registered to vote.
Citizen John Warren said League of Women Voters “is a nonpartisan group founded in 1920. The (development) came from the women’s suffrage movement that were encouraging women - who gained the right to vote - to go out and vote!”
Voter participation in the United States now is at an all-time low, he said.
“We want citizens to come out, get registered and then vote. We’re a nonpartisan organization. We just want participation, so we’re here to help people register, educate them on how they can vote and just go from there,” Warren said.
Shari Benyousky, citizen, said the League of Women Voters has come and gone in Kosciusko County.
“It has never been officially finished with all the paperwork, so that’s our goal in the future: To incorporate it and become an actual chapter, which would be the Northern Central Indiana Chapter. We are currently affiliated as members at-large of the Indiana chapter of the League of Women Voters,” she said.
Currently, the League of Women Voters has 17 paid members in the county with other volunteers coming. “So, probably 25 people that come and go and help out with various events,” Benyousky estimated.
They meet once a month for now, but she said they are doing events more often.
“Every Monday we are at the (Warsaw Community Public) Library registering people to vote. We’ll be coming to Third Fridays again, and we’re looking for other venues, so if anyone has a venue where we can put up a table and sit and register people or check their registration, if it’s valid or if they’ve moved, we can do that, too. We can do others if we can find more spots,” she stated.
They have a Facebook page under League Women Voters North Central Indiana for people to contact them.
Warren said they’re a nice group of local citizens trying to get together to spread the word of how important it is to vote.
“Bipartisan. And that’s a very big focus for us to be bipartisan and to register people to vote in all ways,” Benyousky said.
