PIERCETON — The Pierceton Town Council is looking at establishing an ordinance implementing time limits on yard sales.
During its Monday council meeting, Town Marshal Jim Bumbaugh said there's been an issue during the last two weeks with what he described as a "nonstop yard sale." Bumbaugh said he gave a copy of the county's zoning ordinance regarding yard sales to the resident in violation. Four days after this, the items the resident was attempting to sell were moved.
Bumbaugh asked the council to consider adopting a town ordinance regarding the number of days a yard sale can take place. Council approved having town attorney Tammy Keirn create an ordinance.
In other business, Clerk-Treasurer Myra Mast said the owners of Kaleidoscope Weddings and Events asked about the possibility of reserving two parking spaces on Ind. 13 in front of their building solely for the business's use.
Council approved Kaleidoscope placing temporary, removable signage to reserve spots at the building when there are weddings or events happening.
Mast also reminded citizens to sign up for REACH Alert, a notification system which sends e-mails and text messages to residents with reminders and emergency information.
During the public comment section of the meeting, Jeff Parker, owner of Hummingbird Hill Nursery, said he is considering expanding his business. He said the town owns 4.4 acres east of their location and expressed an interest in purchasing the land if it becomes available.
Council also:
• Welcomed new Councilman Chauncey Smith to the council.
• Elected Matt Brubaker as the council's vice president.
• Learned the Pierceton Police Department will assist with traffic control for the Catholic Church Eucharist Pilgrimage beginning at 10 a.m. today. Bumbaugh told the community to avoid the area of Pierceton Road during that time.
• Approved completing a water audit with Fleis & VandenBrink as the lead engineering firm.
• Announced JPR as the chosen engineering firm for the town's master utility study.
Pierceton Council's next regular meeting is at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 12. The next Pierceton Redevelopment Commission meeting is at 5:30 p.m. July 25.
