On Friday, Republican Nathan Scherer officially filed to run for northern district county commissioner.
The Kosciusko County position currently is held by Brad Jackson, who has served as commissioner for over two decades.
In a brief interview, the Syracuse Town Councilman said he decided to run to be involved in the community and it was an opportunity to make things better for the next generations.
“There’s a lot of different aspects of the future and the future of work that need to be worked on, in terms of who is going to be ready and equipped from a community standpoint to embrace different forms of work than we have in the past. Just need to make sure the community is focused on building families, strengthening community and creating opportunity for people to thrive and grow here, and look at this place as a place where they can prosper in the long term,” he said.
According to a provided statement from Scherer, he is a seasoned advocate for community initiatives and a dedicated resident of the county. Scherer “brings forth a wealth of experience and a genuine passion for serving the needs of the people. Through collaborative efforts and a steadfast commitment to progress, he aspires to elevate the living standards and opportunities for all citizens in the county.”
Throughout the campaign trail, Scherer “aims to engage with constituents, listening attentively to their concerns and aspirations, ensuring that the voices of every community member are heard and represented,” the release states.
"I firmly believe that by focusing on family values, strengthening community bonds, and expanding opportunities, we can pave the way for a prosperous future for every individual and family in our county," he said.
As a member of the Syracuse Town Council, Scherer said he’s gained a lot of good experience.
“The town functions similar to the county, the county is just bigger, so the impact that I would have moving to a county position versus the town would still affect the town, so I could still serve my town,” he said.
As to why he decided to seek the commissioner seat versus one of the at-large seats on the county council, Scherer said his experiences have been more in the executive level- and strategic-type roles and less chief financial officer or budget-type roles.
“So my strength is more on the operations and executions side,” he stated.
Scherer has been attending many of the commissioners’ meetings so he feels well-versed with what he’s seen so far. He plans to continue attending the commissioners meetings throughout the year so he’s up to speed with what’s going on and meet as many people as he can so he can hit the ground running on day one if he is elected.
