Harold Eugene ‘Gene’ Miller

Harold Eugene "Gene" Miller, 90, of rural Akron, passed away on Feb. 28, 2024, at 2:24 p.m. at his residence.
On Jan. 28, 1934, in Paxton, Ill., Gene was born to Kenneth Eugene Miller and Irene L. Marshall Miller. He has lived in Akron for 67 years since 1957, having lived in Illinois prior.
On Dec. 25, 1954, at the Silver Creek Church of God, he married Carolyn Sue Gagnon and for the past 70 years they shared the joys, worries, tenderness and companionship of their married life.
Gene was a farmer and was a faithful member of the Silver Lake Gospel Hill Church, Silver Lake, and was a graduate of Paxton High School with the class of 1952. Gene had been involved for many years in the horse racing circle, he raised and raced many harness racing horses out of his stable "Broken Arrow Stables." He was very active in the Nappanee Raceway and the ITPA and was elected to the ITPA Hall of Fame in 2013.
Gene is survived by his wife, Carolyn Miller, of Akron; daughters: Tammy Miller, of Warsaw; Lisa Hoffman and husband Todd, of Rochester; Penny Shewman and husband Dwight, of Mentone; sons, Kevin Miller and wife Judy, of Akron; Stan Miller and wife Kerri, of Akron; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; sister, Janet F. Wood, of Winona Lake; Karen Sue Weaver and husband Ken, of Fort Wayne; brother, Robert Miller and wife Margaret, of Burket.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Phyllis Cook.
Friends may visit with the family on Sunday, March 3 from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Gospel Hill Church, 303 S. Jefferson St., Silver Lake. Funeral services will be held Monday, March 4 at 10 a.m. at the church with Rev. Bobby Board and Justin Harshman. Burial will follow at the Nichols Cemetery, Akron.
To honor Gene's memory, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude’s Children Hospital or Nappanee Raceway.
Arrangements have been entrusted with the Earl-Grossman Funeral Home, Argos, and Earl-Love Funeral Home, Akron.
