WINONA LAKE – Calvary Tabernacle of Winona Lake aims "to be a benefit to the community," said its pastor, Brie Lycan.
It's why the church at 1300 Wooster Road has started a daycare.
The Kosciusko Chamber of Commerce had a ribbon-cutting ceremony Thursday for Calvary Kidz Childcare Ministries.
Lycan said church members "saw a need in the community (for child care)."
"We want this church to be a community-minded church, a church that is able to be a part of people's lives, not just on Sundays but throughout the week," he said.
Lycan noted his wife, Britney Lycan, the ministry's director, has numerous years of child care experience.
While the couple were living in southern Indiana, Britney opted to start working in child care when she decided she didn't want others watching their two kids anymore while she worked, said Brie. Britney then took classes for child care at Ivy Tech.
Brie and Britney staff the daycare, along with a lead teacher. They hope to hire a few more staff so they can care for infants as well.
Currently, ages 1 to 5 may be at the daycare, with six kids being cared for now. The daycare is open 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Britney said the daycare uses "a Christian-based curriculum."
"Parents are more than welcome to come through and look at everything that we teach," she said.
The daycare includes a science area and block area.
"We have dramatic play. We have an art station, and we have a reading station," said Britney of some of the daycare's aspects. "We do crafts throughout the week, so children have things that go home with them to show parents what they're learning."
"We're affordable. We're one of the lower-costing daycares in the area," said Brie. "We understand that we're a small entity here, but at the same time we're family-oriented. We're Christ-centered, and one of the edicts that God gave us is to be a benefit to our community to help out our community, and that's what we're going to do here at Calvary."
To sign up their kids for preschool, call 574-267-7773 or 812-277-7420.
