The competition, following the Indiana State Chess Regional held in Warsaw on Jan. 20, saw participants from across the state, with Warsaw being one of five regional sites.
Fareed Sultan Mohammed, a fifth- grader from Washington Elementary, emerged as the elementary school junior varsity state champion with a perfect score. Other WCS finishes included:
● Josiah Burden (Lincoln), in the third grade and under division, placed 13th, and Asher Howe (Washington) secured the 28th place.
● Aarav Jena and Ezra Burden (Washington) in the elementary junior varsity division finished 32nd and 34th.
● Maryam Anwar (Washington) clinched the third place trophy in the Middle School Junior Varsity division.
● In the high school junior varsity division, Nate Anderson from Warsaw Community High School (WCHS) placed sixth, with Aiden Carr and McKale Hagg finishing 26th and 39th.
Chess coach Jay Bolduc said, "It's quite an accomplishment to qualify for state, let alone place in the top half of all players statewide. It's a testament to the hard work and dedication of the chess players from Warsaw."
