Warsaw School Board To Fill District 3 Seat Vacancy

Warsaw Community Schools announced Wednesday a vacancy on its school board.  
Indiana law requires WCS to promptly fill District 3’s vacant seat on the school board. The board seat term runs through Jan. 1, 2029, according to a news release from WCS.
Mallika Klingaman ran unopposed for the District 3 board position to take over for Elle Turley, who did not seek re-election. At November’s Warsaw School Board meeting, Klingaman’s residency eligibility was questioned as attorney Timothy Shelly, with Warrick and Boyn LLP, said a school board candidate is required to live in the district that they file for, on the day of the election and when the person starts their term.
Klingaman recently decided to withdraw her name as a trustee-elect, as “with Mallika’s decision to move, she finds herself in the difficult position of being unable to serve as she had hoped,” according to a previous news release from the board.
With Klingaman’s withdrawal from the board, state law requires the remaining school board members, by a majority vote, to fill the vacancy by appointing a person who meets all residence and other qualifications required of a regularly elected board member, according to the release.
Indiana law, Warsaw Community Schools’ election plan and school board policy require the following qualifications of a candidate for this seat on the Board of School Trustees: an American citizen, a registered voter, 21 years of age or older and a resident within the school corporation boundaries, District 3 continuously for two years immediately prior to the date of the appointment, no felony convictions and the person cannot simultaneously hold another elected office. If selected, the person cannot be an employee of WCS.
Those interested in being considered for this vacancy should submit a letter of interest in care of Warsaw Community School Corporation, Board of School Trustees, Attn: Board Vacancy, 1 Administration Drive, Warsaw, IN 46580 or by email at [email protected].
An application questionnaire will be provided to those residents who submit a letter of interest. Applicants must deliver a completed questionnaire to the school corporation’s administration office or mailed to [email protected] by noon Jan. 3.
