A Grace Village resident was surprised Wednesday by being awarded the 2024 grand prize Good Housekeeping Award winner in Warsaw through the Warsaw Housing Authority.
The grand prize winner for 2024 is Marvene Scott. She received a $150 Walmart gift card, candy, balloons and a Good Housekeeping Award certificate.
Scott thought she had to sign some paperwork but was surprised with the award when inspector Tom Bulger, North Central Indiana Housing Program Manager Vicki Haines, local media and Warsaw Mayor Jeff Grose showed up.
Each year, Bulger determines during his inspection if the tenant has kept the unit clean and reported any needed repairs to the landlord during the year. Families receive a Good Housekeeping Award and the landlord is notified.
Each December, the WHA draws a name for a grand prize winner from Warsaw and Goshen. As families receive an award throughout the year, their name is placed in the Warsaw resident or Goshen resident jar for a grand prize winner, according to a provided news release.
Scott said she was surprised by the award and wanted to thank everyone. She enjoys living at Grace and used to work at the facility.
Bulger said Scott makes his job easy.
Wednesday, Grose said she was a good neighbor, which is proven by her receiving the award.
Grace Village has been providing project-based housing, opening up 10 units for lower-income seniors since 2021.
The grand prize winner for Goshen is Cynthia Romera, who is a resident of Ashton Pines Apartment Complex.
The WHA also awards a runner-up for Warsaw and Goshen with $50 Walmart gift cards. Warsaw’s runner-up is William McPeak, whose landlord is Courts of Colfax. Goshen’s runner-up is Adam Boss and his landlord is Tim Miller.
Approximately 64% of Warsaw families received a Good Housekeeping Award this year. Approximately 41% of Goshen families received a Good Housekeeping Award.
WHA is always in need of more landlords to participate in the Housing Choice Voucher Program. For more information, call 574-269-7641, ext. 1030.
