December 9, 2024 at 7:41 p.m.
Two people had to be flown by helicopter from the scene of a two-vehicle “critical injury” collision at the intersection of U.S. 30 and CR 350W Monday evening.
Seven other people in the vehicles also were injured.
Indiana State Police Lt. Chad Larsh said, “It sounds like, preliminarily, that the U-Haul-style vehicle (box truck) was traveling westbound, and the maroon (Chevrolet Silverado) was traveling northbound on 350, failed to stop, crossed the path and the U-Haul-style vehicle T-boned the passenger” side of the Silverado.
The maroon Chevrolet Silverado was driven by Jorge Moyotl, 44, Warsaw, according to an ISP news release late Monday night. The yellow 2011 GMC box truck was driven by Usiel Martinez, 23, Bremen.
Martinez and his passenger were both taken to Lutheran Kosciusko Hospital with injuries, which are not considered life-threatening.
There were seven occupants in the Silverado. Moyotl and a backseat passenger, Fidela Acuahuitl, 44, Warsaw, were flown to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne by Lutheran Air Ambulances with serious injuries. Another adult and four juvenile passengers in the Chevrolet also were taken to local hospitals with injuries not believed to be life-threatening.
Neither alcohol nor drugs are suspected to be factors in the crash. The lack of seatbelt use is believed to be a factor in the number of injured due to the Chevrolet having too many occupants, the release states.
Larsh estimated the ages of the vehicles’ occupants ranged from 9 years old to adults.
The accident at the intersection occurred at approximately 5:39 p.m.
A stop sign on CR 350W was taken out by the GMC, but replaced.
Both lanes of U.S. 30 were stopped for the air ambulances to land and transport the injured. One lane of eastbound U.S. 30 traffic and all of westbound U.S. 30 was opened up at by around 6:45 p.m. All lanes were reopened by 7:23 p.m.
Along with the Indiana State Police, at the scene were the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office, Warsaw Police Department, Lutheran EMS, Warsaw-Wayne Fire Territory, Krause Towing and a conservation officer.
No further information was available as of Monday night.
