PIERCETON - A garage and all of its contents - including a classic Studebaker car - are a total loss after a fire shortly after midnight today.
Pierceton Fire Department Chief Nathan Rhoades said they received the initial call at 12:23 a.m. today of the fire at 64 EMS R3 Lane, Pierceton.
“It’s a total loss. The neighbors called it in,” he said. It appears the fire began in the area of a wood stove. “The homeowners had a classic car in there, an old Studebaker, that they took to car shows. Kids’ toys and everything, they’re all in there. It’s a total loss. They lost everything and there’s no insurance on the place.”
He said the homeowner is Jonah Studebaker.
Damage is estimated at $50,000 to $55,000 total due to the value of the building, the car and all the contents inside.
There were no injuries, and Rhoades said they were able to keep the fire from spreading and causing any major damage to any of the neighbors’ houses. There was some siding melting on one neighbor’s home and another neighbor’s home had some discoloration.
Assisting were fire departments from North Webster, Winona Lake, Warsaw and Sidney. Firefighters were on scene for approximately 2-1/2 hours.
