Warsaw Bowl was before the Kosciusko County Alcohol Beverage Board on Thursday for a violation that occurred in February.
The beer, wine and liquor restaurant license for the bowling alley at 1702 E. Market St., Warsaw, was up for renewal but a representative first had to explain to the board what kind of violation occurred and what’s been done to make sure it doesn’t happen again.
Burl Haywood, manager of Warsaw Bowl, said, “I believe my bartender - it was loitering. Underage person loitering and served.”
He said he went over the training with the bartender and pulled them aside, telling her that they couldn’t have underage people loitering and being served alcohol.
“Pulled actually all my bartenders aside and said, ‘We don’t want to do this again,’ because we had it happen probably two to three years prior,” Haywood said, though the person from that incident is no longer a Warsaw Bowl employee. He said he told his bartenders to card everyone who walks into the facility. “I’m only a second-year owner.”
For the board’s information, Indiana State Excise Police officer Daniel Vredenburg Jr. told them, “This was a compliance inspection. And they failed when they served the youth.”
He asked Haywood if the bartender who served the youth in February still worked for him, and he said she does.
Vredenburg said the fines have been paid, and the last violation at Warsaw Bowl occurred in December 2021, but they’ve had nothing until this past February and “passed numerous inspections before and since.”
Board President Alan Alderfer asked Haywood what Warsaw Bowl’s current training program was for bartenders.
Haywood said they do the online training, and then he provides them with training.
The board approved Warsaw Bowl’s license renewal 4-0.
A new beer and wine dealer grocery store license for Near Me Smoke & Grocery LLC, doing business as Near Me Smoke & Grocery, 1009 S. Huntington St., Syracuse, was tabled until the Jan. 2 board meeting.
Vredenburg asked Jyodinder Singh, one of the owners of the permit, if he received the orange public notice sign in the mail. Singh said he had but had not posted it yet.
Vredenburg explained to Singh the orange sign needs to be posted 10 days prior to the hearing for the board to be able to hear the license “because it has to be advertised so the public knows in case they want to come and remonstrate.”
Since the orange sign was not posted as required, the new license application was continued to the board’s Jan. 2 hearing at 1 p.m.
“You’ll need to make sure you fill that sign out completely, post it in the window facing the highway, and make sure it’s posted a full 10 days before that date. And then leave it up there until after we have the hearing, and we’ll see you back here next month,” Vredenburg stated.
Licenses without violations renewed included:
• Down Under, 801 N. Huntington St., Syracuse, beer, wine and liquor restaurant license.
• DDK Enterprise LLC, doing business as The Turf, 118 S. Main St., Milford, beer, wine and liquor restaurant license.
• Vandelay Industries LLC, doing business as Man Cave Brewing, 10201 Ind. 13, Syracuse, beer, wine and liquor restaurant license.
• Wake N Lake LLC, doing business as Wake N Lake LLC, 3774 N. Barbee Road, Warsaw, beer and wine dealer grocery store license.
