Walmart, 2501 Walton Blvd., Warsaw, was evacuated Friday afternoon after a chemical spill was found.
Just before 1:30 p.m. Friday, Warsaw-Wayne Fire Territory responded to an electrical fire at Walmart, said WWFT Fire Chief Joel Shilling. Fire crews went in and investigated and could not locate an electrical fire, but did locate a small chemical spill in a few different spots in the building, back in the automotive area.
The smoke that was initially reported as a fire was from the chemicals mixing together, he said. As far as what chemicals were involved, Shilling said he didn’t have that information as of Friday afternoon, but said he didn’t believe it was hazardous for customers at that point.
The store was evacuated so WWFT could air monitor the spill and make sure the store was safe. The fire department used their Titus fan to ventilate the store. Once that was done, Walmart was opened back up to customers after 3 p.m.
WWFT was assisted by the Warsaw Police Department, Plain Township Fire Department and Winona Lake Fire Department.
