BOURBON – It is with heartbreaking sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved wife, mother and grandmother, Shirley Ann Batty, who passed away peacefully in her home on Aug. 26, 2024, at the age of 82. She was a lifetime resident of Bourbon.
Shirley was born on July 22, 1942, to Fred and MaryJane Thomas Schaetzle and grew up with her siblings: Herb Schaetzle, Carolyn Hanley and Janet Kester. She graduated from Bourbon High School and married her high school sweetheart, Tony King, in 1959. They were together until his death 1992.
Shirley is the mother of five children and grandmother to nine grandchildren: Gerri King, and son, Phillip (Kendra) King; Jeff (Kim) King, and children: Keely King and Kale (Breanna) King; Beth King (David Schleisman), and children: Blaine King and Alysabeth Faulkner; Sandra King, and son, Ryan (Casie Jo) Shanyfelt; and Jay King, and sons: Christopher Bradfield, Brendan King and Darrin King. She was also blessed with seven great-grandchildren.
In 1998, she married Ron Batty, the man who became her helpmate, best friend and caretaker to the end. Together they built a beautiful love-filled home, which is the family’s treasured gathering spot. Ron brought an additional daughter and grandchildren into the family: Jessica (Scott) Thomson and daughters: Abby, Kate and Julia.
Shirley’s children and grandchildren were her joy. She was the center and strength of the family, and the ultimate source of wisdom and all practical knowledge. She enjoyed playing board games with the kids and decorating every room for each holiday. She was a passionate gardener and a great cook. She enjoyed visiting festivals and antique shops with Ron, where they added to her collection of snowmen, antique kitchenware and oil lamps. She was also a member of the Red Hat Society and The Better Homes Club, and she loved chatting with the Wednesday morning coffee girls.
Shirley was preceded in death by her daughters, Gerri and Sandy; and her sister, Janet.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, Aug. 29 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Deaton-Clemens Funeral Home, 115 S. Main St., Bourbon. The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Aug, 30 at Deaton-Clemens Funeral Home, 115 S. Main St., Bourbon, with Hospice Chaplain Rod Holmes officiating.
