Even though the general election is several weeks away, it is time now to prepare to vote. It is time to review the requirements that apply to anyone wishing to register to vote for the first time. To register to vote in Indiana, you must:
1. Be a U.S. citizen.
2. Be at least 18 years old by the next election.
3. Be a resident of your voting precinct for at least 30 days before the next election.
4. Have proof of residence when registering.
You can register to vote, check your registration status, or update your registration online at indianavoters.in.gov.
If registering by mail or in person, you must complete and return a Voter Registration From (download at https://forms.in.gov) or pick up a registration by mail form at a BMV license branch or public assistance office.
In-person registration locations are:
1. Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) license branch while applying for or renewing a driver’s license, permit or identification card.
2. A public assistance office while applying for services.
3. Certain agencies serving persons with disabilities while applying for assistance.
4. Armed forces recruitment agencies.
5. County voter registration offices.
6. Unemployment compensation offices while applying for services.
7. County Clerk’s Office in the Kosciusko County Justice Building, main floor.
To register by mail, you also need to enclose a photocopy of your driver’s license, BMV ID, current utility statement, bank statement or government document showing your name and current address.
No other person may register for you. You do not declare a party affiliation at the time of registration. You may contact the Kosciusko County Voter Registration Office for more information at 574-372-2332.
Don’t wait until the last minute. Register now so there will be no question regarding your eligibility when it’s too late. There are plans in the works by those who will be looking for any excuse to not count your vote. Be smart ... be ready ... register. Make your vote count!
