Triton Superintendent Says School Year Has Started Well

BOURBON – Triton School Board was updated Monday on how the beginning of the 2024-25 school year has gone.
Superintendent Jeremy Riffle said the school corporation had a very successful opening day back to school and has had great feedback so far.
Eric Nation, from National Alliance For Drug Endangered Children, spoke to Triton staff. Nation encouraged them to find their why for why they do their job. Law enforcement and the Marshall County Prosecutor’s Office was also at opening day, Riffle said.
Communication has been very good this year and some initiatives were made to make things more efficient.
Riffle said teachers have been creating a culture of high expectations in the classroom this week. Staff have been spending time with students, getting to know them and setting boundaries with students to know what being prepared for class looks like.
Riffle thanked teachers and staff for creating high expectations for students. He also thanked bus drivers and teacher support staff for what they do.
In other business, the school board:
• Learned the junior-senior high school has 424 students enrolled so far with five new teachers and one new school nurse.
• Learned Triton will participate in a counselor brunch Aug. 26 where Triton and area counselors get together and collaborate with each other.
• Approved moving the October school board meeting from Oct. 14 to Oct. 7.
• Approved the hiring of Olivia Waymouth as the head girls golf coach and a high school social studies teacher, Ben Waymouth as a volunteer girls golf coach, Joel Grindle as the high school business teacher, Diane Murphy as the junior high English/language arts teacher, Jason Groves as the physical education/health teacher, Lana Hostrawser as a fourth-grade teacher, Abby Dreibelbis as a fifth-grade long-term substitute teacher, Hannah Baker as a fifth-grade teacher, Ethan Stark as a junior high science teacher, Paula Meredith as a special needs bus driver, Marikay DeCrow as a substitute bus driver, Sharon Stalbaum as a special needs bus aide and Deborah Yarbrough as a junior-senior high school instructional aide.
• Approved a resolution to withdraw from ESCRFT (Educational Services Centers Risk Funding Trust) effective January 2025 as the school corporation’s insurance company.
Business Manager Tom McFarland said the insurance company required 90 days notice when the school corporation was terminating the contract with the company.
The school board then approved a contract with Miller Insurance Group for property/liability/workers compensation for 2025.
