A Syracuse man was arrested after child pornography allegedly was found on his phone after it was seized.
Alexander Cole Gibson, 26, of 501 Prairie Drive, Syracuse, is charged with possession of child pornography, a level 5 felony. He was booked into the Kosciusko County Jail at 3:23 p.m. Monday on a $5,250 preliminary bond.
According to the probable cause affidavit, on May 23 the Indiana State Excise Police (ISEP) District #2 and ISEP Digital Forensics Unit served a search warrant at a tobacco shop. The search warrant was part of an active investigation regarding the illegal sale of alcoholic beverages at the business.
While in that capacity, officers had contact with the business manager, Gibson. In Gibson’s possession were three electronic devices, including a Samsung Galaxy Note9 cell phone. At the time of the seizure, Gibson provided a passcode for the cell phone to investigators. The search warrant authorized investigators to analyze seized electronic devices and search for “but is not limited to subscriber information, address books, voicemails, contact lists and stored media, text messages, photographs, call log history and/or past or present orders.”
After the phones and tablet were seized on May 23, the data was downloaded for examination, according to court documents.
On July 26, the Samsung cell phone was ingested in a software program. At the time, 25 keywords were typed into the software for it to locate the artifacts in the case. All of the keywords generated hits within the cell phone.
The Samsung cell phone was activated on Feb. 2, 2019, and associated with a Google account displaying Gibson’s name. Data prior to the 2019 activation of the cell phone was still discoverable on the device due to the method of activation used to set up the device.
The cell phone held media artifacts which included audio files, pictures, Samsung Story Service files and videos.
An ISEP officer began to review the photos. Upon review, the officer noticed animated pictures of sexual contact between animals. Immediately following those pictures were several photos of male babies, some of which had their genitals exposed. One picture had a baby posed in a sexual manner. As the office continued to review the photos, he saw other photos of child sexual assault material involving children under the age of 12, according to court documents.
