Three local volunteer fire departments are among those receiving new personal protective equipment (PPE).
In 2023, Gov. Eric J. Holcomb and the Indiana Department of Homeland Security secured state funding totaling $17.7 million for fire training and equipment.
Out of the funds, $10 million in PPE was issued to volunteer fire departments across the state, according to a news release from the Indiana Department of Homeland Security.
The $10 million will purchase 940 complete sets of PPE and SCBA (Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus), benefiting 66 fire departments across every Indiana fire district. The selection process addressed the poorest volunteer departments first and those with the oldest equipment.
The funds represent the first-ever funding allocated by the General Assembly for firefighter training and equipment, stated the release.
Local fire departments receiving equipment are Silver Lake Volunteer Fire Department, Etna Township Fire and Rescue Services and Richland Township Fire Department in Larwill.
