SILVER LAKE – At Wednesday night's meeting, the Silver Lake Town Council discussed the five-year capital plan for the water and wastewater utilities, including operating costs and associated rate increases.
Following consultation with Baker Tilly, the suggested rate increase was 50% for sewer and 25% for water over three phases. The current average cost for residents is $87 per month; after the total increase the cost would go up around $30 to around $117 per month.
Council President Hugh Murfin and Councilwoman Nichole Taylor voted to pursue the 50% and 25% increases in the five-year capital plan as it stands. Councilman Jean Weller abstained.
There will be public hearings before the increases will be put in place, which Clerk-treasurer Tonya Conley estimates would be in September.
Under old business, Council reviewed trash bids and chose Stafford, who had the lowest bid: $4,546.95 for year one, $4,680.32 for year two and $4,823.86 for year three in a three-year contract.
Rambler Island, the newly named park (formerly Indian Trail Park), will have new signage. Council approved a $855 quote from Graycraft Signs Plus.
In new business, Council approved a $500 donation to the Kosciusko County Trap, Neuter, Release program which has been taking care of stray cats in town.
In other business:
• Council approved an easement for 410 E. Sycamore St. and a fence setback exception for 405 E. Sycamore St.
• Town Marshal Jason McGlennen thanked Kosciusko Cares for their help with a local resident. McGlennen had two applicants for the part-time position but they have since declined.
• Fire Chief John Conley reported six runs this month and updated the Council on the fire truck the department is looking to purchase, which could arrive as early as May.
• There was a town docket of $131,790.83.
• There is an executive meeting scheduled for 3 p.m. April 18.
The council will next meet at 7 p.m. May 8.
