BURKET – Burket Town Council continued discussions on town cleanup Thursday.
A spring cleanup day has been the topic of discussion for the last couple months.
In March, Councilwoman Debra Deniston updated the council on costs of having a dumpster in town for people to throw things like mattresses in. She said she would go back and ask if Stafford’s would pick up the items instead of providing a dumpster.
Council President Bill Rayburn said he got an update from Deniston as she was not at the meeting Thursday. Deniston reported Stafford’s was not doing spring cleanups this year due to staff resources.
Rayburn said he’d like to talk to someone at Stafford’s to see if they could collect the spring cleanup items the same day as regular trash pickup and see where that conversation went. Councilwoman Lena Ball said she thought that would be fine.
Rayburn also brought up free days that KC Recycling Depot is offering.
For residents of Kosciusko County, KC Recycling Depot will take items for free through June 28, according to KC Recycling Depot’s Facebook page. Items they will accept include TVs, computers, cell phones, microwaves, printers, cords, other various electronics, paints and stains, household chemicals and cleaners, light bulbs and other mercury products, aerosols, gasoline and other flammables and fire extinguishers.
Rayburn said he wanted to make the town aware KC Recycling will take items for free until June 28 and hopes it will make town cleanup easier.
In other business, the council:
• Heard there is a sinkhole on Center Street, about 100 feet west of Market Street. Rayburn said it seems to the remnants of the old drainage system. The council agreed to fill the sinkhole and close it off.
• Heard the town garage sale is May 31 and June 1.
• Heard seven code violation warning letters for seven properties were sent out last month.
Rayburn said some properties have made progress in cleaning up their properties, while others haven’t. The due date is “a couple days from now.”
The town will issue a fine to those properties that don’t fix the issue in the code violation letter.
• Heard Clerk-Treasurer Katina Webb will be writing a $2,000 check for the town’s portion of emergency generators at the fire department and training center.
