PIERCETON — The Pierceton Town Council heard a concern about motorists speeding on Ind. 13 within town limits during Monday’s meeting.
Rob Neel, an owner of local antique store Second Fiddle, said he was concerned about drivers traveling faster than the posted 25 mph speed limit in town.
Neel said since the Market and Main Street intersection is painted for pedestrian traffic, a marker could be placed in that area to tell motorists to yield to pedestrians.
"There have been multiple times when we have had to step out into the traffic so that a lot of our customers, people who are in the senior citizen window ... to help them get across the street," said Neel. "We're concerned about the traffic pattern. People drive through (town) on (Ind.) 13 like it's 55 miles per hour."
Neel asked about the possibility of the council submitting a letter to the Indiana Department of Transportation allowing signage to be placed to alert drivers to yield to pedestrian traffic. He said a sign had been placed in the downtown area at one point in time but that INDOT received a complaint about it. Council said they would look into the matter.
In other business, Neel also said the Pierceton Downtown Merchants Association will begin hosting Second Saturdays again, with the cost being $10 per vendor space. All proceeds from vendor space sales will go to the Pierceton Chamber of Commerce for promoting the town.
The council also approved a contract with the Pierceton Youth League and an agreement with the town of Sidney for Pierceton Police Department to assist in providing law enforcement coverage.
Council also:
• Approved hiring James Ault for seasonal help with the street department at $15.75 per hour.
• Approved the closing of Catholic Street from First Street to Washington Street for an American Legion picnic on June 8. The road will be closed from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. that day.
• Approved abatements for OMCO, Paragon Medical and Aludyne.
• Learned Shoes and Dos will take place at Pierceton Elementary School from 2 to 5 p.m. April 21. Free haircuts and shoe vouchers will be given to children and teenagers.
• Learned Pierceton's Christmas Committee will be holding a pie sale during Pierceton Fire Department's fish and tenderloin fry from 4 to 7 p.m. May 11.
The council's next meeting is at 6:30 p.m. May 13. There will also be a redevelopment commission meeting at 6:30 p.m. May 9. Both meetings will be held in the Pierceton Community Building.
