MENTONE - Firefighters were on the scene of a house fire in Mentone for about four hours Sunday night.
The Mentone Fire Department got the call for the fire at 111 N. Franklin St. at 6:50 p.m. Sunday.
Fire Chief Mike Yazel said the residents were home, heard a noise upstairs and when they went to investigate the noise, they saw the fire. They called the fire department and evacuated the residence.
The cause of the fire is unknown.
He said the southeast end of the upstairs was heavily damaged by the fire and smoke, and the home sustained a fair amount of water damage.
“Fire was rolling out two of the windows when we got there,” Yazel stated.
The Burket Fire Department was called for a full assist.
Along with approximately 21 Mentone firefighters, 15 responded from Burket.
Yazel said they were on scene until about 11 p.m. Sunday. While they knocked the fire out initially pretty fast, fire did get into the eave system of the roof and firefighters had to chase the flames. A metal roof recently had been put on the “unique” roof system, he said, and it took a lot of manpower to work the scene.
Damage was estimated at $100,000 to $150,000 because of a lot of water damage.
There were no injuries reported.
County records indicate the home is owned by Anthony Wayne Gilbert.
