Local School Districts Have Plans In Place For Eclipse Learning On Monday
April 5, 2024 at 5:33 p.m.
With the eclipse Monday afternoon, area school corporations have decided on activities or schedules for that day.
Here’s a rundown of what the districts previously announced they were planning to do on Monday.
Manchester Schools
Students have an eLearning day due to the eclipse on Monday.
Tippecanoe Valley
Tippecanoe Valley School Corporation will release all school buildings 30 minutes later than usual.
While classes will proceed as scheduled, this adjustment in timing allows students and staff to fully engage with this celestial event.
Each student and staff member will receive eclipse glasses meeting ISO 12312-2 international standards and endorsed by the American Astronomical Society (AAS) to safeguard their eyes during observation.
The eclipse timeline starts around 2:30 p.m. and lasts until around 4 p.m. Since the peak eclipse will occur around 3:09 p.m., close to dismissal time, school dismissal times will be slightly delayed. Middle school will be released at 3:50 p.m., high school at 4 p.m. and both Akron and Mentone will dismiss at 4:15 p.m.
Triton
Triton School Corporation students will have a two-hour early dismissal Monday for the solar eclipse.
Due to the arrival of the eclipse, Triton will dismiss schools at 1 p.m.
Warsaw
Warsaw Community Schools will provide essential resources, including 6,700 AAS-approved solar glasses, thanks to the support from the Zimmer Biomet Foundation.
WCS has prepared special lesson activities for its schools to engage in while preparing for the event.
For students that stay at school during the eclipse, WCS will spend time with students to help them understand what it means when looking at the science aspect of it, as well as allowing to view the eclipse safely.
Wawasee
Wawasee Community Schools announced “an enriching educational experience for all students on Monday.”
Wawasee stated they will provide NASA-approved solar eclipse glasses for all students.
Because the eclipse time is near student dismissal times, Wawasee altered its dismissal times for Monday. Elementary schools will dismiss at 3:20 p.m., Wawasee Middle School at 3:25 p.m. and Wawasee High School buses will depart at 3:25, with student athletes, student drivers and walkers dismissing at 3:05 p.m.
Wawasee asks families that wish to pick up their children to watch the eclipse to pick them up before 2:30 p.m. to avoid disruption during eclipse viewing activities.
Whitko
Whitko Community Schools will be open on Monday. Astronomy and eclipse lessons will be incorporated throughout the day.
Whitko will provide solar viewing glasses to all students and staff.
Parents and guardians who wish their children to view the eclipse from home should contact their respective school.
