MENTONE – E. Catherine “Katie” Whetstone, 97, of Fort Wayne, and formerly of Mentone, went home to be with the Lord at 6:57 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2023, at The Village at Anthony Boulevard of Fort Wayne.
Katie was born on Oct. 9, 1925, in Atwood, to the late Glen and Ethel Easterday Snider. She was the second youngest of six siblings. A resident of Mentone for most of her life, she graduated from Mentone High School in 1943. She was married on Jan. 18, 1945, at Homestead Air Base Chapel in Homestead, Fla., to Robert J. Whetstone, who preceded her on Feb. 8, 1997.
She was a member of the Mentone United Methodist Church where she was active for many years in the church choir, United Methodist Women and Emmaus Walk ministry. She also served her local community well as a Cub Scouts leader, delivery driver for Meals on Wheels, clerk-treasurer for the town of Mentone and working for many years at Boggs & Nelson Insurance Agency. She was a loyal Cubs and IU basketball fan who enjoyed taking trips, and playing cards, board games and bingo.
Most of all, she loved and served her family. After Bob’s passing she moved to Fort Wayne to be closer to her children and grandchildren there and in the South Bend area. She cheered them on at countless sporting and music events, encouraged them every time she interacted with them, and faithfully prayed for each of them daily. She was a wonderful and godly woman who influenced many with her love and kindness.
She is survived by sons: Mike (Susan), of Fort Wayne; Tom (Debbie), of Nappanee; and Chris (Chelle), of Crown Point; nine grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Katie was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bob; son, Jim Whetstone; sisters: Mary Thomas, Wylan Bowers, Doris Cooper; and brothers, Harold Snider and Hollis Snider.
The funeral service will take place at 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 25 at King Memorial Home, 101 N. Tucker St., Mentone.
The interment will take place next to her husband in the Mentone Cemetery, Mentone.
Visitation hours will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 25 at King Memorial Home, Mentone.
Memorials can be made in her memory to the Mentone United Methodist Church.
