No. 16 Grace Women’s Soccer Rolls To Win Over Carolina

WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Three players scored in a 3-0 win for Grace’s women’s soccer team on Saturday night.
The No. 16 Lancers blanked Carolina University at 1st Source Bank Field, marking Grace’s second shutout of the season.
The young Lancer squad — who started eight freshmen — shook off the sting from Thursday’s defeat with a dominant performance on Saturday. Grace controlled possession essentially from start to finish.
The Lancers only faced danger one time in the match, which happened to occur in the opening minutes. A defensive lapse led to a one-on-one opportunity in the penalty box. Sofia Williams came up big with a lunging stab to save a close-range shot and keep the game scoreless.
After struggling to score in its first few games, the Lancers put those troubles far behind them with an impressive first half.
Rosalie Gefrorer struck first in the 18th minute. The freshman was fouled during a crafty dribble toward Carolina’s goal. She stepped up and curled the free kick beyond the wall and past the diving goalkeeper for her first collegiate goal.
Eleven minutes later, Grace doubled its lead. Rylee Burns used her speed to find space along the right endline. After a few touches into the penalty box, Burns drove a low shot inside the near post, scoring her first collegiate goal from a narrow angle.
Grace’s third goal of the half came in the 36th minute. After a corner kick, Gefrorer passed to Amy Wearing who poked in her goal.
The Lancers took a confident 3-0 lead into halftime. Grace outshot Carolina 10-1 in the first 45 minutes to go along with a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.
The second half had a similar theme; the Lancers possessed the ball fluidly and consistently, refusing the Bruins any time on the ball.
Grace continued to mount pressure offensively and kept the Bruins pinned back into their own end.
The Lancers would not score again despite taking nine shots with six corner kicks after halftime.
The Bruins were outshot 19-1 and did not record a shot attempt across the final 88 minutes of the match.
Williams recorded the shutout in goal for Grace; she was protected well by the back line of Jasmin Slump, Megan DeBoest, Feline Abbo and Leah Burke.
Gefrorer led Grace’s offense with one goal and one assist, taking nine shots with four shots on goal.
The Lancers begin a three-game road trip next, all three against ranked opponents. On Sept. 9, Grace will travel to play at No. 22 Olivet Nazarene.
Men’s Soccer Falls To No. 15 Pioneers
OLATHE, Kan. - Grace College’s men’s soccer team continued its stretch of playing nationally ranked opponents with a contest against No. 15 MidAmerica Nazarene on Saturday afternoon.
Despite outshooting the Pioneers 17-9, the 16th ranked Lancers came up a goal short as they fell by a final score of 2-1.
It was all Grace early as the Lancers had the first five shots of the game and only allowed MNU one shot the entirety of the opening half.
Martim Sequeira had three of the early chances for Lancers all of which were parried away by the Pioneer keeper. MNU’s only shot of the half came at the 25-minute mark, but the try was sent wide.
With 15-minutes left in the first half, Sequeira had another try on goal, and Grace had a corner kick but both chances were thwarted and the game remained a scoreless tie at the intermission.
The Lancers had a 7-1 shot advantage in the first and both teams had a corner kick opportunity.
The second half was not far along when the game's first goal was finally found.
The Pioneers used sustained pressure to break through the lancers defense and netted the go-ahead goal.
Grace and MNU traded chances over the next 10-minutes, but it was the Pioneers who once again broke through.
MNU capitalized on a corner kick opportunity and buried the goal to take a 2-0 lead with 25-minutes remaining in the game.
The Lancers remained undaunted, and just three-minutes later cut the deficit back to a single marker.
Juan Garcia sent a shot on goal that was saved but the rebound fell to freshman Josh Cruz who took advantage of the golden opportunity to score his first career goal.
The Lancers continued to mount pressure late. Grace had a trio of corner kicks four shots but was unable to find the equalizer, falling by the final score of 2-1.
Sequeira led all players with seven shots and Matteo Conci made three saves. MNU was called for 15 fouls compared to Grace’s 13 and both teams were awarded four corner kicks.
Volleyball Wins Again, Off To Best Start In Nine Years
MISHAWAKA, Ind. - Grace’s volleyball team wrapped up a perfect weekend at the Bethel Invitational on Saturday.
The Lancers improved to 6-1 with a four-set victory against IU South Bend; Grace finished the tournament with three wins in three matches.
Grace is enjoying its best start to a season since 2014. The squad’s only loss so far is to current No. 4-ranked Viterbo.
On Saturday, the Lancers excelled in most facets of the match. Grace’s offense racked up 50 kills on a .230 percentage.
Defensively, IU South Bend was muted to 37 kills at a .085 percentage. Grace also amassed 15 block points and served up 10 aces.
The opening set saw the Titans pull away midway through; the score was level at 11s, but the Titans quickly surged ahead by five. Grace did its best to rally late, scoring five straight points with kills from Livia Tate and Katie Swanson.
But the Titans recovered, ending the set with three points to win 25-21.
Grace found swift revenge in the second set. The Lancers rolled to an 11-point win. In the set, Grace erupted for 15 kills on a .324 percentage.
The third set started sharply for Grace as well with the team winning the first three points, including two blocks from Tate.
The Titans managed to tie the score and kept pressure on the Lancers. But late kills from Sahara Bee, Cassadi Colbert, Alisha Leffring and Katie Swanson handed Grace a 25-21 victory.
Grace exploded in the fourth set with a commanding 9-2 lead.
The Lancers maintained their assault, later tallying six straight points with a pair of aces from Emma Blackford. Grace ended the match with a dominant 25-11 win.
Jadyn Ross notched a double-double with 10 kills and 10 assists, adding 2 solo blocks and 2 block assists.
Tate wrapped up her impressive weekend defensively with four solo blocks and four block assists; she also added five kills in attack.
Swanson finished with a match-best 11 kills on a .429 percentage, adding two solo blocks and two block assists.
Bee finished with nine kills on a .350 percentage, and Colbert added seven kills.
Morgan Syoen finished with 23 assists and 11 digs, and Riley Owens had 19 assists, 4 digs, 3 aces and 2 kills.
Liz Schmidt notched a team-high 14 digs, and Blackford served up five aces.
Next up, the Lancers will play at home for the first time this season. Grace will kick off Crossroads League play on Wednesday with a 7 p.m. match versus Goshen.
