Kosciusko County Convention, Recreation and Visitors Commission gave $22,950 in grant funding to the Kosciusko County Velo Cycling Club at its meeting Wednesday.
These funds will go toward supporting the 2024 Fat and Skinny Tire Fest that is consistently a success for the community. Kosciusko County Velo Cycling Club Treasurer Nick Hauck said, "This event is the largest three-day bike event in the Midwest, consistently selling out our hotels."
Grace College Athletic Director Chad Briscoe came before the commission to ask for $5,000 for their NCCAA D1 men and women's basketball championship. Briscoe said after 15 years of hosting this event, this will be the last year Grace College will host it. The commission approved the $5,000 grant.
Warsaw Public Art Commission Chair Suzie Light asked KCCRVC for $10,000 to help support the ongoing communitywide art project currently in the works. Due to it being a little outside the scope of what the KCCRVC does, they granted $3,000 to go toward the marketing of the event.
Courtney Whetstone, a representative from Junior Achievement of Northern Indiana, asked the commission for $9,000 to go toward helping fund a hospitality fair, attracting businesses to participate in a hiring event for high school students. The commission said this was outside of their jurisdiction; however, they could give $2,500 for the marketing side of the fair.
The commission also heard from Sally Knecht, an advisor for Chautaqua-Wawasee. Knecht asked for and received $1,000 from the commission. The funds will go toward an ad costing $500, which will promote Chautaqua-Wawasee in the "Visit Indiana Travel Guide," and $500 to their Old Fashioned Christmas event on Nov. 25.
The commission also heard an update from Cori Humes, director of the Kosciusko County Visitors Bureau. Humes said occupancy reports are down from 2022, but the bureau is currently strategizing for off-season and looking toward advertising for the holidays and winter months.
Humes also said the digital sign for the visitors bureau should be erected by Thanksgiving.
The meetings for 2024 will be Jan. 17, March 13, May 8, July 17, Sept. 11 and Nov. 13.
