The Neighborhood Fresh grocery chain recently raised money during the month of October for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.
The annual fundraiser is run through Five Star Distributing (Coors Light) in Columbia City and it hit an all-time high this year, raising $26,414. This eclipsed their 2022 efforts by over $7,000, according to a news release provided by Five Star Distributing. Each of the four store locations have a friendly competition to see who can raise the most dollars for St. Jude.
The donations are made by customers of the chain by purchasing Coors Light pumpkin paper pin ups. The Neighborhood Fresh stores are located in Gas City, North Webster, Syracuse and North Manchester. This year, many local businesses also got involved by making large financial donations to the St. Jude cause, the release states.
Neighborhood Fresh is an employee-owned and -operated chain and many of the employees of each location work hard to sell for St. Jude.
This year, the North Manchester location won the overall total, raising $8,865. The Syracuse location tallied $8,529 and has dominated in past years thanks to employee George "Buddy" Bowen. Bowen’s passion for raising funds for St. Jude is unmatched, according to the release. Bowen raised over $4,000 alone this year. One hundred percent of the total raised goes directly to St. Jude.
St. Jude is a children's treatment and research facility for cancer or those with life threatening diseases. St. Jude has no billing department and does not send out bills to the families that receive care. St. Jude relies heavily on private and public donations. It was founded in 1962 by the late Danny Thomas. When the hospital first opened its doors, it had a child survival rate of 4%. Today, the survival rate is 94%.
Coors light has been involved with St. Jude since 1992 through its distributor network and has raised well over $90 million for the hospital.
