Lawrence A. “Jack” Horney Jr., of Grace Village Retirement Community in Winona Lake, passed away at 8:20 p.m. on Wednesday, May 10, 2023, at Grace Village Health Care at the wonderful age of 98.

Jack was born on Dec. 14, 1924, in Sterling, Colo., to Hazel Morton Horney and Lawrence Horney Sr. He was raised in Huntingburg and graduated from high school in 1942. At the age of 17-½, Jack enlisted in the U.S. Navy on June 19, 1942. He was a proud WWII veteran who served on the USS George Clymer and was honorably discharged on Jan. 5, 1946. Later in his life he was honored as a veteran and participated in the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., to the World War II Memorial.

He was married on Oct. 28, 1948, to Dorothy Mae Bockelman and they shared 36 years of marriage together before she passed away May 25, 1984. Jack was blessed to have met someone new to share his life with and married Mary Lou Robertson on March 29, 1985. Mary Lou passed away Aug. 8, 2004.

Jack moved from Texas to the Warsaw area in 1967. He retired in 1989 from Zimmer Inc. in Warsaw after 15 years in the quality control department. Jack always kept busy and enjoyed being part of the community he lived in. He was a longtime member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, served on the Oakwood Cemetery Board for 12 years, was a fourth-degree member of the Knights of Columbus #4511, Elks Lodge, V.F.W. #1126 and the American Legion Post #49, all of Warsaw. Aside from loving sports, Jack had a vagabond spirit in him and loved to travel.  He also enjoyed a competitive card game, the sand of Hilton Head beaches, being very frugal and always found the humor in his last name! Jack will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who will be forever missed by his loved ones.

He leaves behind three daughters: Kathy (Mark) Workman, Warsaw; Phyllis (George) Kolopanis, Normal, Ill.; Mary Beth (William) Geist, Hilton Head, S.C.; son, David (Debbie) Horney, Fishers; and two stepdaughters, Joyce (Jerry) Parcell, North Webster; and Janet Shriver, Bedford, Texas. Also surviving are nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and his longtime friend, Mary Ulmer, Winona Lake. He was preceded in death by two wives, and step-daughter, Jeanne Garner.

Friends and family may visit from 10 to 11:45 a.m. on Tuesday, May 23 at Redpath-Fruth Funeral Home, 225 Argonne Road, Warsaw. Jack’s life will be celebrated by Father Jonathan Norton with a funeral mass following visitation at noon on Tuesday, May 23 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 125 N. Harrison St., Warsaw. Military rites will be conducted by members of the American Legion Post #49, V.F.W. #1126, both of Warsaw, and active-duty members of the Navy Honor Guard. He will be laid to rest at a later date at Oakwood Cemetery of Warsaw.

Memorial donations may be directed to Honor Flight of Northeast Indiana, P.O. Box 5, Huntertown, IN 46748.
