Local High School Sports Recaps For 5/19

Baseball

Warsaw at Mishawaka Marian


Warsaw came up just short in a high-scoring affair against Mishawaka Marian Thursday night, falling 10-9 on the road. The Tigers are now 15-11-1 this season.

Kellen Bailey went 2-4 with three runs driven in and two runs scored. Cohen Heady had two RBIs while Khareus Miller had two hits, including a double and a run driven in.

The Tigers are at home Saturday morning against Lake Central for the team’s final regular season game of the spring.

Caston at Triton

Triton avenged a loss to Caston earlier this week with a 6-4 victory at home Thursday night. The Trojans are now 9-15 this spring, 5-9 in the Hoosier North Athletic Conference.

Drew Bingamon had two hits and scored two runs for Triton. Braxton Kaufman hit a double and drove in a run. Jacob Pitney struck out four in seven innings on the mound, allowing just three earned runs.

The Trojans remain at home for their next game Saturday morning against future conference opponent Argos.

Softball

Mishawaka at Warsaw


Warsaw was unable to pick up a win in either game of a double header against Northern Lakes Conference champion Mishawaka Thursday night, falling 17-0 and 11-1 at home. The Lady Tigers are now 2-20 this season, 2-12 in the Northern Lakes Conference.

The lone Tiger run over the course of the two games came on a solo home run hit by Lauren Eastwood. In the second game, Aubrey Sparks threw her first ever complete game on the mound.

Warsaw begins sectional play Monday evening against Elkhart at Penn High School.

Manchester at Oak Hill

Manchester was unable to secure a win on the road at Oak Hill Thursday night, falling 7-4. The Lady Squires are now 5-20 this season.

Paxton Baker had two hits, one being a double, and two runs scored. McKelvey Espeset hit a triple and drove in two runs. Hadley West also had an RBI.

The Lady Squires begin sectional play Monday evening at home against Whitko.

Tennis

Manchester vs. Southwood


Manchester continued its stellar season with a 5-0 win in the sectional semifinal against Southwood at Peru High School. The Lady Squires are now 15-1 this season.

All five of Manchester’s wins came in straight sets. No. 1 singles player Sarah Kerlin dropped just one game in her 6-1, 6-0 victory. No. 3 Bethany Penrod won 6-0, 6-2. The No. 2 doubles pairing of Addison Brubaker and Hailey Krom won 6-1, 6-1.

The Lady Squires took on Peru Friday night for the sectional championship. Details to come in Monday’s paper.

Golf

Warsaw/NorthWood at Goshen


Warsaw picked up a pair of wins in a three-way conference match against NorthWood and Goshen Thursday night, tallying a team score of 160 to take first place. The Tigers wrap up conference play at 6-1.

Breckin Christner led the team with a 37, followed closely by Aiden Bowell, who shot a 39. Austin Craig shot a 40 to round out the team’s top three.

Warsaw will play at the Northern Lakes Conference Championship Saturday morning.

Tippecanoe Valley/Whitko at Manchester

Tippecanoe Valley picked up two conference wins over Manchester and Whitko Thursday evening, winning the three-way match 155-174-218. Manchester finished in second while Whitko took third.

The Vikings had the top three scores on the leaderboard, led once again by Greg Miller and his score of 34. Not far behind him was Eli Love with a 38. Manchester’s Connor Trump shot a 41 to take fourth place. The Wildcats were led by a 49 from Noah Burnworth.

Valley and Whitko will both play at the Rock Hollow Invite at Peru Saturday morning.

Big Third Quarter Leads To Warsaw Win In Home Opener
With two massive wins already under their belt in the early season, the Warsaw girls basketball team returned to the Tiger Den for the home opener against Fort Wayne Snider Thursday night. The Lady Tigers were able to shake off a slow start and explode in the third quarter to remain undefeated with a 74-45 win.
