The troop collected 200 pounds of lids, said Troop Co-leader Sherri Johnson. The lids were then taken to Green Tree Plastics, Evansville, and the company turned the lids into a bench. An anonymous donor covered the cost to make the bench.
The girls had to help get bids on pricing from different companies so the lids could be made into a bench. Johnson said the troop worked on the project for about a year.
She said the project taught the troop about green living and recycling. Hopefully, the bench will help those at the school for a long time.
The bench is located near one of the school’s playgrounds with a plaque of whom the bench was donated by.
She heard about the project when she was teaching and she wanted to do a project dealing with Earth Day.
She also wanted to give back to Eisenhower Elementary School.
Also, the Girl Scout Council recognizes businesses and entities that are supportive of Scouts. Johnson said she nominated Eisenhower for a community support award because the school administration allowed the troop to meet at the school and helped with the bench project, allowing the troop to store hundreds of boxes of Girl Scout cookies at the school so troop members wouldn’t have to store the cookies at their houses.
Johnson said there is a growing interest in Scouts, so leaders are always needed.
