The Trojans struck out eleven times as a team during the contest and only managed one hit.
The visitors were able to get on the board during their first trip to the plate, attacking Triton starter Drew Bingamon early and often. The Lancers were able to put their first two hitters on second and third with no outs, but were only able to score one run thanks to some nifty defense from the Trojans. On a ground ball hit by Karson Quinn that scored starting pitcher Lucas Plummer from third, Triton shortstop Braxton Kaufman made the throw over to first before the ball made it back over to third to get a second runner out for a 6-3-5 double play.
After a 1-2-3 inning from the Trojan hitters, Bingamon was able to get into a groove in his second inning on the mound, striking out two and retiring the side with no issues. Triton remained hitless after two frames, but were able to get their first base runner on in the game in the form of a walk to second baseman Isaiah Vaca.
The LaVille offense came alive once again in the top of the third, with Plummer helping his cause on the mound with another solid trip to the plate. The Lancer starter would hit a triple to center field, the first of three straight hits by the visitors that would turn into two runs.
The Trojans were able to put some pressure on Plummer for the first time in the bottom of the third. Hunter Schaetzle led off the inning with an opposite-field base hit, Triton’s first, and only hit of the game. After a walk to Bingamon and some aggressive base running, the home side had runners on second and third with two outs. The rally would not produce any runs however, as Plummer was able to strikeout Kaufman to end the inning.
LaVille was able to add onto its lead with another run in the top of the fifth. An errant throw by the Triton third baseman allowed the Lancer leadoff man to reach second base, where he would score from not long after on the second RBI single of the night by Collin Czarnecki. The visitors threatened to extend the rally with a couple more base runners, but Bingamon ended those hopes by throwing his third strikeout of the game to end the inning.
Things would quiet down for the next few innings as both pitchers hit their spots and began putting down hitters at will. Fresh off of a K to end the fifth, Bingamon struck out the first two hitters he saw in the sixth on his way to his third 1-2-3 inning of the night. But as outs began to become more and more precious, the pressure remained on the Trojan hitters.
Triton was finally able to get onto the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh thanks to some miscues by LaVille on the mound and on the field. A pair of errors as well as a walk and hit batter allowed Triton to load the bases and score a run all without recording a hit. Jacob Pitney came to the plate representing the winning run with two outs, but his deep drive to left field was not deep enough, and was caught to end the game.
Triton will not have to wait long to try and exact revenge on the Lancers, as the two teams will meet again Friday night in Lakeville for the second of a back-to-back.
