Local High School Sports Recaps For 5/4

Baseball

Wawasee at Warsaw


Warsaw picked up its second double-digit win over Wawasee Wednesday evening, winning 12-2 in five innings. It’s the fourth win in a row for the Tigers, who improved to 9-6-1 this season, 5-2 in the Northern Lakes Conference. The Warriors fall to 2-11, 1-5 in the NLC.

Four different Warsaw players had at least two runs driven in, led by Khareus Miller, who had three on three hits. Hunter Dippon had two hits and two RBIs. For Wawasee, Ty Brooks went 1-2 with a home run.

Both teams are on the road against conference opponents Friday night, with Warsaw traveling to Goshen while Wawasee heads to Mishawaka.

Tippecanoe Valley at Whitko

A late rally by Whitko was enough for the Wildcats to earn a 9-6 conference win over Tippecanoe Valley Wednesday evening. Whitko is now 12-2 this spring after winning five in a row, 3-1 in the Three Rivers Conference. The Vikings fall to 5-7, 2-2 in the TRC.

Breyden Kirkdorffer was the hero for Whitko in this one, hitting a bases-loaded double with the game tied in the sixth, driving in three runs and putting the Wildcats in front for good. Max Platt struck out eight on the mound for Whitko, while Easton Grable went 3-4 with two runs driven in. Valley was led by a 2-4 day from Markus Bernicky, who drove in two runs in the effort.

Whitko plays at Bellmont Friday night while Valley is off until Monday when the team hosts Maconaquah.

Rochester at Manchester

Manchester was on the wrong end of a blowout Wednesday night, dropping its conference affair to Rochester 20-0. The Squires are now 7-8 this season, 2-2 in the Three Rivers Conference.

Gavin Martin, Ethan Hendrix and Evan Martynowicz each had a hit for Manchester, which has scored just two runs over the last three games.

The Squires will look to snap their three game skid Saturday afternoon against DeKalb.

Softball

Warsaw at Wawasee


Wawasee avenged an earlier loss to Warsaw with a 9-0 win at home Wednesday evening. The Warriors are now 10-6 this spring, 3-3 in the Northern Lakes Conference. Warsaw drops to 2-11, 2-5 in the NLC.

Wawasee was led by two-RBI nights by Brooke Catron, Haylee Allen and Ari Garcia. Allen was also lights out on the mound, striking out 15 in seven innings while only giving up one hit to Warsaw’s Nekiana Hamilton.

Warsaw hosts Goshen Friday evening while Wawasee faces off with Fort Wayne Carroll on the road Saturday morning.

Rochester at Manchester

Manchester dropped its third game in a row Wednesday evening, falling 13-3 to Rochester in five innings at home. The Lady Squires are now 3-13 this spring, 1-3 in the Three Rivers Conference.

McKelvey Espeset led the way for Manchester, going 2-3 with an RBI. Samantha Shock also drove in a run for the Lady Squires.

Manchester is back in action Friday night at home against Peru at 5:30 p.m.

Tennis

Concord at Warsaw


Warsaw continued its strong conference play with a 4-1 win over Concord Wednesday evening. The Lady Tigers are now 5-4 this spring, 4-1 in the Northern Lakes Conference.

No. 1 singles player Addie Lind was dominant once again, winning her match 6-1, 6-0. No. 3 singles competitor Emma Van Puffelen was fantastic in her return from injury, winning her match 6-0, 6-0.

The Lady Tigers play their next match Monday at home against Goshen.

Manchester at Huntington North

Manchester continued its dominant start to the season with a 3-2 victory over Huntington North Wednesday evening. The Lady Squires are now 9-1 this season.

All three victories for Manchester came in the singles competition. No. 1 singles player battled back after dropping the first set to pick up a 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 win. No. 3 singles competitor Bethany Penrod earned the quickest win of the day for the Lady Squires, winning 6-3, 6-1.

Manchester is back at home Friday night for a conference match against Whitko.

Southwood at Whitko

Whitko continued its strong start to the season with a 5-0 win over Southwood Wednesday night. No. 1 singles player Abbi Frank and the No. 1 doubles pairing of Bailey Wolfe and Jillian Culp both earned 6-0, 6-0 victories. No. 2 singles player Anna Arter was also dominant, winning 6-1, 6-0.

The Lady ‘Cats head to Manchester Friday for a conference showdown with the Lady Squires.

Golf

Tippecanoe Valley at Wawasee


Wawasee earned a nine-stroke victory over Tippecanoe Valley Wednesday afternoon, winning the nonconference match 165-175. The loss drops Valley’s record to 8-2 this season.

Wawasee’s Jay Finlinson was atop the leaderboard at the conclusion of the match, shooting a 38. Not far behind was Valley’s Greg Miller with a 40. Rounding out the top five was Wawasee’s Myles Everingham (41) and Vaughn Pyson (42) as well as Valley’s Eli Love (44).

Both teams are in action Saturday morning, with the Vikings playing at Plymouth and the Warriors heading to the Concord Invite.
