Warsaw Area Career Center Work-Based Learning Spotlight: Bowen Center
By Melissa Kissling-
Parents: Sheena and Nathan White
Employer: Bowen Center
Student’s Job Title: Patient Services Specialist
Supervisor: Jennifer Hatcher, office manager
How has this position been helpful to you? Working at Bowen has given me a new perspective on many things. I grew up living what I now know to be a pretty sheltered life; Bowen has shown me just how limited my view of my own community was. Because of how Bowen is organized, we are able to reach and serve a very underserved population within our community. I had not been introduced or made aware of this part of the community, nor did I know that much about what Bowen does. Bowen has not only shown me this part of the community, but it has also shown me how needed the services Bowen offers to them are. Through working at Bowen I have seen a change in myself. I have come to love working for Bowen; I look forward to my time there each day because of my new knowledge. I am passionate about Bowen’s mission and sharing that with others.
What have you learned? Through my time at Bowen I have learned how to operate our databases, a new level of customer service (including how to effectively convey complex information to patients), basic health insurance processes, CPI Nonviolent Crisis Intervention, how to properly administer Narcan, many illegal substances and their effects, HIPPA rules and regulations, how to correctly explain, complete, and file paperwork, many issues surrounding mental health (including its connection to physical health and substance abuse disorders), and the importance of working in a healthy work environment.
Your Career and College Plans: I plan to attend Indiana State to double major in insurance and risk management and finance.
Supervisor Input:
What duties does this student perform?
Answering phones, checking patients in and out for appointments, doing paperwork with new patients, collecting payments, balancing cash drawer, setting up insurance, fixing any account issues, checking in groups and so much more.
How is this job preparing this student for the future? In talking to Reid, it has definitely helped her choose her career. When she started with us she was trying to decide between two different careers and we were able to help her with that. I also think it gave her a different view than what she had regarding mental health. I know Reid has been really proud of that and her time working here at Bowen.
What do you think of the WACC Work-Based Learning program? I love it and think it’s a fantastic program. Working with these students and seeing them grow socially, gain confidence and knowledge is so rewarding. Helping them decide what they would like to do with their future and being a part of that is a wonderful feeling. I have rehired several of my students for full time Bowen employees and still keep in contact with them as well.
